In this project, the aim was to redesign the signage system for the Katzen Arts Center at American University to improve navigation and visual cohesion. Starting with the primary directory map at the entrance, the design incorporates a clear legend and a qualitative color scheme to categorize different areas and functions within the building.
The color palette is intentionally playful and vibrant, echoing the building's artistic identity and fostering a sense of creativity throughout the space. Each category is assigned a distinct color, ensuring consistency and enhancing wayfinding. For example, the restrooms are represented in yellow on the map, and all restroom signs across the building are designed in the same cheerful yellow for immediate recognition.
Accessibility was also a key priority, as seen in the use of universal symbols, Braille, and bold colors that are both functional and visually engaging. This updated signage system not only simplifies navigation but also celebrates the building’s role as a hub for artistic exploration, creating a cohesive and inspiring experience for its visitors.
